Revisiting Some Betrayer History

Tonight I was thinking I would dig out my old corkboard that I had used as a story board for several projects, and see if I could do some visual brainstorming/planning. There to my surprise I found these remnants from the planning stages of Betrayer. So bittersweet now that it's all finished!
Anyway, just thought I'd share, since they made me smile.

An early character profile and concept sketch of Evie.

A map of Acatra Dahma- so I wouldn't get lost while guiding my characters through an imaginary country! Originally the town where Evie was captured was named Sylvandark, rather than Darkwood, and that's how it appears here.

Of Hungarian Rhapsodies and Hobbits in Ithilien.

Those of us who are lifelong readers know that books aren't just compilations of adventures and characters that we love. A favorite book is like a window to a past version of yourself. You open up its pages and instantly recognize that familiar smell, unique to that particular book. You smile when you see the stains and watermarks in its pages where you spilled a bit of spaghetti sauce, and where your tears fell when you read it for the first time. You remember that it was October, and that you were obsessed with silver gel pens, horses, and pen pals.

I started reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time when I was twelve, right after we got back from one of our summers spent in Alaska. To say it left an impression on me would be like saying the ocean has some water in it. Then it was around that time that my mom picked up a cassette tape (remember those?) called "The Flight of the Bumblebee" from the Salvation Army, probably thinking to further my education with some classical music appreciation. It was all piano music, from the wedding march to-- you guessed it-- Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2. To this day, though I've searched Amazon, Youtube and Bing, I haven't been able to find other copies or recordings of it anywhere.

I'm really not sure I want to admit this, but my car has a cassette deck. I know, right? You're all wondering what kind of dinosaur I've been driving. Well anyway, the other day I rediscovered that old cassette that used to be such a treasure, and popped it in. Oh the memories! How I used to pour over those books while the music played, and I would imagine what part of the piece reminded me of which scene in the book while my imagination ran wild with wonder. For some reason I always paired the Hungarian Rhapsody with the part in Two Towers (one of my all time favorites from the books, though not so much in the movie) where Frodo and Sam journey through the oppressed yet still vibrant Ithilien. Their growing danger is so starkly contrasted with the beauty around them, the shadow of their likely suicide mission tempered with the reminder of a greater purpose-- that above the darkness the stars still shine.

That has idea has stuck with me all my life as surly as the sheen of silver ink and the haunting melodies of an old cassette.

So what books have become memories in your life? Is there a special time of year, a smell or an idea that you associate with them? Tell me about it!

Announcing Earthbound

Hello again! Wow, it's been a long time since I posted on here! So much has been happening, between the bustle of the holiday season and getting Betrayer out there. I never knew what all publishing a book would entail! But here we are on the other side, the holidays behind and spring ahead, with all the anticipation that it holds. A big thank you to those of you who have supported Betrayer by telling your friends and leaving reviews. I'm very pleased with the sales and feedback I've gotten in these first few months of publication. So exciting!

Well, here's another chapter in the writing journey. A portion of the first draft of my next book, Earthbound, all printed out and ready to send to my cover designer in Alaska. There's still a lot of work ahead with this one, but hopefully having a cover in the works will provide an extra kick of motivation.

Earthbound is an urban fantasy/sci-fi adventure about a young woman with a dangerous gift, who wants nothing more than to go home. Unfortunately for her, 'home' is on the other side of the galaxy, and the only way she can get there is with the help of a man bent on bringing destruction to her world.

Keep checking in for more updates! I'm really looking forward to really diving into the writing world this year, working toward the release of Earthbound, growing this blog, and hopefully hosting some giveaways!

Forward to the Past.

I'm kinda into the whole fantasy, sci-fi thing, if you haven't noticed by now. Lately I've been binge watching a few shows on Amazon Prime- Warehouse 13 and Eureka. It's always a mind bender when they start messing with the past. Back to the Future and Back to the Future II are probably more recognizable, classic examples of changing the future, and then re-changing it. I love it when just one little decision, one small action, can turn reality as the characters knew it into a monster of a different color. They might think they aren't changing anything, but just their presence in a place and time where they're not supposed to be can have devastating consequences. It can even change who they are.

The past is always a part of us, influencing our decisions, making us who we are. Memory is the rudder directing our way.
The present is elusive. Just a glimmer of time. It eats up the future, and leaves the past in its wake, like a spark traveling up a piece of paper, leaving behind ash.
The future directs us as well, baiting us along. It's where our minds dwell, always thinking ahead by years, days, hours or milliseconds. It's where our hopes are directed, where in our minds we project an image of ourselves as we wish we were- rich, smart, skinny, healthy...

So back to characters changing the future by changing the past. It's not as fictitious as you think.

Every moment we are moving through time, gobbling up future and leaving past behind. We are all time travelers. And you know what that means? It means that every action, every choice we make, is changing the future.

     Wha...?

Right now you are becoming who you will be. You made the decision to take time and read this blog post. That decision altered- just a tiny bit- from the person you would have been if you had decided to go jog for twenty minutes instead. That extra hour you have before bed, that you were thinking about spending reading a book? That's gonna make a difference in who the future you is, if you choose it over watching a movie, or eating a snack, or talking to your family. Not saying that one choice is always wrong, and another always right, but it will. Always. Change. You.
